The YAMATO Tsunagari Project
Remake project

The kimonos stored in some wardrobes for a long time. The worn-out kimonos about to be disposed of. The kimonos that can no longer be sold in a store due to their quality. We collect those fabrics that still have potential and steadily create new products. The focus of this project is not only to pay attention to environmental problems but also to make them see the light of day.

YAMATO Tsunagari Project×CHRISTIAN PEAU

In this project, we have created silk shawls by piecing together the pieces from the bolts of traditional Japanese cloth that had been damaged goods stored as dead stock using patchwork.
The patchwork, characterized by its perfect balance and delicate design, is done by CHRISTIAN PEAU, a fashion brand based in Kobe.
Those old kimono fabrics have been remade into new textiles by CHRISTIAN PEAU’s craftsmen, who skillfully use various materials including leather and create unique items with a classic design.
What accentuates the delicate beauty of the kimono fabrics is mud dyeing, the fabric dyeing technique used only in Amami Oshima, where we have produced kimonos for a long time.
Each fabric is dyed by craftsmen in muddy rice fields in Amami Oshima. The mud dyeing technique, comprising too many processes to describe here, gives fabrics a complex combination of dark colors.

CHRISTIAN PEAU

Based in Kobe and founded in 2002, the brand delivers its products to people around the world. Its collections composed mainly of leather items, are characterized by their classic design with an avant-garde touch influenced by the works of European craftsmen in the 1800s.
